Career-threatening injury haunts Sania Mirza

India's Sania Mirza lost 6-3, 6-4 to Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues in the Dubai Championships first round yesterday and then spoke of worries over a recurring injury to her right wrist. The unseeded Sania, who had wrist surgery in 2008, needed treatment during her defeat by Anabel.
"When something that was a career-threatening injury ... starts to come back you obviously start having a lot of thoughts in the middle of the match," she said.

"It hurts when I stretch out for a forehand. It hurts when I try to hit a hard backhand crosscourt.
"I was thinking in the match, 'What am I going to do? Do I play in Malaysia next week? Do I go back home? Do I see my doctor?' All these things are going on in your head."

Israel's Shahar Peer, at the centre of controversy a year ago when she was refused entry to Dubai, beat 13th-seeded Belgian Yanina Wickmayer 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 in an incident-free match.
"I think the treatment I get from the people here is amazing ... including security," said Shahar. "They are really kind, they are doing everything for me.

"I really wanted to win this match, not only because of tennis but to make a statement that politics and sport should not be involved. There is no place for that for me."

Double blow for sania mirza

Sania Mirza's campaign at the Dubai Tennis Championships ended on a disappointing note as, after singles, the Indian also crashed out of the doubles event here today.

Sania and Spaniard Virginia Ruano Pascual, seeded seventh, lost 3-6 3-6 to unseeded Chinese combination of Jie Zheng and Yung-Jan Chan in the first round.

Sania, who complained of a old wrist problem, had exited from the singles yesterday after suffering a 3-6 4-6 first round defeat at the hands of Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain.

Sania slips in WTA ranks

The first round exit from the Pattaya Open last week severely affected Sania Mirza's singles ranking as the Indian slipped 18 positions to 77 in the latest WTA list issued today.

Sania's start to the 2010 season has been far from impressive as she could not cross the first hurdle at three tournaments -- including Australian Open -- out of the four she has played so far.

Sania's doubles ranking also suffered, going down to 36, a loss of three spots.

Sania Mizra leads India to Top

Sania Mizra and Poojashree Venkatesha scored dominating singles victories as India drubbed hosts Malayisa 3-0 to top pool A of the Asia/Oceania Group II competition in the Fed Cup tennis tournament in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.
With this win, India have qualified for the play-off tie, the winner of which will be promoted to Asia/Oceania Group I. Playing the first rubber, Poojashree thrashed Chin-Bee Khoo 6-1 6-1 to yet again give India the lead and then Sania secured the tie with an identical win over Jawairiah Noordin in the second rubber. India today rested Rushmi Chakravarthy and instead Poojashree partnered Sanaa Bhambri for the doubles rubber, which they won 7-6 6-2 after beating Noordin and Chin-Bee Khoo.

Sania Mirza and Rushmi Charavarthy puts India on top

Sania Mirza and veteran Rushmi Charavarthy registered contrasting singles victories as India blanked Kyrgyzstan 3-0 in the play-off tie to win back their place in the Asia/Oceania Group I of the Fed Cup tennis tournament here today.

India were relegated to Group II of the zonal competition last year after losing the play-off tie to Chinese Taipei.

With talented Poojashree Venkatesha suffering a knee injury ahead of the tie, Rushmi played the first singles against Bermet Duvanaeva.

The Indian faced stiff competition from Bermet before prevailing 6-4 1-6 6-3, to give India the lead.

The second singles was a cake walk for Sania, who cruised to a 6-0 6-2 win over Ksenia Palkina and clinched the only slot for promotion for her side.

Paes rises; Sania, Bhupathi slip in rankings

Newly-crowned Australian Open mixed doubles champion Leander Paes on Monday rose a rung to seventh in the ATP doubles' ranking, displacing one-time partner Mahesh Bhupathi in the latest list.
Paes has 5575 ranking points, while Bhupathi lost a spot to slip to eighth with 5015.
Paes had made the quarter-finals in the Australian Open men's doubles event with Czech Lukas Dlouhy. He clinched the mixed doubles' championship with Zimbabwean Cara Black.
Bhupathi, on the other hand, had a forgettable outing at Melbourne Park, losing in the very first round of the men's doubles event due to a calf muscle injury.
The veteran later pulled out of the mixed doubles' event in which he was to team up with compatriot Sania Mirza.
Sania, meanwhile, also slipped down three rungs to 59th following her second-round exit from the Australian Open.
The Hyderabadi, who recently broke off her engagement with childhood friend Sohrab Mirza, however, rose five places to 33rd in the doubles' chart.
