Sania Mirza continued her impressive form this year as she moved into the second round of the Dubai Tennis Championship with a straight-set win over Russian Ekaterina Makarova.
The Indian ace, who lost in the final of the Pattaya Open, continued her impressive form to overpower her Russian counterpart 7-5, 6-2 last night.
Sania, who was given a wild-card entry into this 56-woman tournament, appeared sluggish at the beginning, and Makarova took full advantage by breaking her in the third game.
But once the 87th-ranked Indian's forehand became more consistent, she broke back in the eighth game and then dominated her rival.
Sania will now take on the 16th-seeded Estonian Kaia Kanepi with the winner likely to face the former world number one Jelena Jankovic in the third round.
