Sania, Leander move up

New York: Sania Mirza entered the US Open women’s doubles quarter finals, but bowed out of the mixed event on Sunday. Leander Paes and Martin Damm won their match to advance to the third round of men’s doubles.

Paes and Czech partner Damm got the better of Alexander Peya (Austria) and Bjorn Phau (Germany) 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) at Flushing Meadow.

Paes and Damm will next meet Jarkko Nieminen (Finland) and Graydon Oliver (US) who upset 11th seeds Julian Knowles and Jurgen Melzer (Austria) 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.

In women’s doubles, the 11th-seeded combination of Sania and South African Liezel Huber trounced Stephanie Cohen-Aloro (France) and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez (Spain) 6-0, 6-3 to book a last-eight berth.

They next face sixth-seed Kveta Peschke (Czech Republic) and Francesca Schiavone (Italy), who beat ousted Ukranians Alona and Kateryna Bondarenko 7-5, 6-1.

In mixed doubles, Sania and Czech Pavel Vizner went down fighting to Katarina Srebotnik (Slovenia) and Nenad Zimonjic (Serbia & Montenegro) 6-2, 3-7, 7-10 in the first round.

Sixth seed Sanam Singh was shown the door by unseeded Yoann Re of Canada in the first round of boys’ singles. Sanam lost 1-6, 1-6.

Rupesh Roy also lost his first-round match, to Gastao Elias of Portugal 6-4, 5-7, 0-6.
