Sania Mirza's dream run at the Dubai Open came to an abrupt halt on Thursday night when she was completely outplayed by Serbia's Jelena Jankovic in the quarter finals.
Sania lost in straight sets to the world number 28 but not before eliminating the reigning US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova and her run should take her into the top 75 when the week's rankings are announced.
It wasn't quite as difficult for Jelena Jankovic as she got off to a great start, breaking Sania Mirza twice in the opening set.
Sania won her first service game to narrow the lead to 5-2. But Jankovic had no trouble holding her serve to take the first set 6-2.
The second set was no different as Jankovic kept up the pressure to break Sania Mirza in the third game. But Sania wasn't giving up, breaking Jankovic right back much to the delight of the crowd.
But Jankovic was relentless much to the disappointment of a partisan crowd as the Serbian went 5-2 ahead. 47 minutes after the match had begun, it was all over.
It may be the end of the road for Sania in Dubai, but her victory over the reigning US Open champion gives her valuable WTA points.
Meanwhile, Jelena Jankovic will meet Serena Williams in the semi-final and she only wishes that the crowd will cheer for her.
