It would be the third meeting against a top-10 player in her fledgling career for the 18-year-old Indian who sent ripples across the tennis world with her brave performance against Serena Williams at the Australian Open this year.
Since January, Sania has come a long way. She is the fastest mover on the WTA computer, leaping 284 places in the last 12 months and her career earnings stands at USD 215,293, a long way from the USD 46,440 at the begining of the year.
She has guaranteed herself USD 70,000 so far at the US Open, and whatever comes her way from now on would be mega bumper.
And this is only her first full-fledged season on the circuit.
The American media and the public have gone crazy about the 'ground strokes drilling, nose-ringed Muslim woman from India'. She would make an interesting counterpoint to Russian-born American-bred Sharapova.
Sania said she did not want to think about her chances against the 2004 Wimbledon champion but was sure that she would not be intimidated.
"I guess once you're on the circuit all the time, you kind of get used to seeing them around and playing against them. So I don't think a lot of people intimidate me now," Sania said ahead of the big clash.
