[TENNIS] Indian sensation Sania Mirza will be one of the star attractions in the inaugural WTA Thailand Open which will take place from October 10 to 16 at the Rama Garden Hotel in Bangkok. The up-and-coming teenager, who caused ripples in the ongoing US Open by reaching the fourth round, will be eyeing her second WTA title after wresting her maiden crown in front of the home crowd in Hyderabad in February.
Ranked 42 in the world, the most successful female player from India will lead the Asian challenge in the US$200,000 tournament, which features big names such as world No 9 Nadia Petrova of Russia and 1994 Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez, who will be seeking her second title in the Kingdom after winning the Volvo Women’s Open in Pattaya in February.
Apart from the trio, two other top 30 players – No 28 Nocole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic and Argentine rising star Gisela Dulko, No 29 in the world, will be here.
Pentangle Promotion, the organisers of the tournament, are trying hard to rope in Mary Pierce, the Frenchwoman who upset former champion Justine Henin-Hardenne in the US Open fourth round two days ago.
But according to the new WTA rules which will be effective after the US Open, top 20 players including the 12th-ranked Pierce, need not confirm their participation until two days before the tournament.
Fans can watch the tournament from October 10-16 on UBC and the last three days on Channel 7. Tickets priced between Bt300 and Bt1,500 are available at (02) 381 8703-4 and (02) 382 3491-3, or can be bought by visiting the website at www.pentanglepromotions.com.
