KOLKATA: The Jamait-e-Ulema-e-Hind on Saturday denied issuing threats to tennis star Sania Mirza against playing in the city unless "she is properly dressed."
Maulana Siddiqueulla Chowdhury, Jamait-e-Ulema-e-Hind spokesman, in a release said: "We have in no way given any threat to Sania."
Alleging that the organisation's stand had been misinterpreted by a section of the media, he said: "Sania has come to Kolkata to play and we welcome her. The clerics have given no threats. Some people are trying to create a sensation in the media by circulating such news. It is a conspiracy to disturb the peace and harmony in the State. It is an effort to defame us and we are deeply hurt."
