NCW decries threats to Sania over her tennis costume

The National Commission for Women (NCW) today decried fatwas and threats issued by some Muslim groups to tennis ace Sania Mirza over her sports attire, saying they were only discouraging her by making such utterances.

"Our advice to everyone is, be they from any community, that they should give their blessing to the young girl who is winning accolades in the global arena and making India proud," NCW Chairperson Girija Vyas told reporters here.

She was asked to react to fatwas and threats given by some Muslim clerics and groups to Sania, asking her to wear "proper clothes" on court.

While some clerics have issued fatwa against her sports attire, the Jamaat-e-Ulema-e-Hind has threatened that the tennis star would be stopped from playing in the Sunfeast Open Tournament beginning in Kolkata next week if she did not wear "proper clothes" while playing.

"Please do not discourage the girl. And then, such statements are also spoiling the atmosphere," Vyas said.
